In Dead Boy we find out the main character Crow is dead, and his parents won’t let him go outside. They’re afraid that if people find out he’s dead, that he’ll get taken away and experimented on. But what they don’t know is that he’s sneaking out at night.

Crow meets a friend during the day, so they plan to sneak out at midnight. Melody and Crow become really good friends, and she finds out he’s dead. But she doesn’t mind.

After the couple of nights they hang out together, they decide to meet up on Halloween night to find what made Crow stay alive after he died. He doesn’t remember how he died. When they go to the park they see a monster with glowing red eyes, and they see it can change into anything.

At the end, he wishes to be a real live boy, but you’ll have to read to find out what happens.

I liked it so much, I bought a copy when I met her at my Library last year. It was my first autographed book!
This book is adorable! All three kids enjoyed it. So cute!

This is so cute! I really enjoy this because it's a comic and it's just plain......AWESOME. My baby sister loves this, she just giggles, laugh, and asks questions like," Why does the fishy have a horn?", and , " Is this a slippery fish?, (aka Slippery Fish from "YouTube.")

My favorite part is when Narwhal makes a new friend and they eat waffles at the end. Even though there are 3 comics in there, they all end with eating waffles. They are short though, they're like 4 pages long each.
We had just bought Don't Push the Button last week, and these books are really fun for the toddler age group.

I know it's not my usual genre, but every now and then I come across a fun book and want to share. :)

So in the same vein as Don't Push the Button, this book is about not touching the pages...until you're asked to touch the pages. It's fun and colorful and my 2 year old had a grand ol' time touching the tablet to "swirl" the colors.

Basically the monster Larry tells you to touch the page and when you turn it, the page has turned purple, or rainbow, or swirly. At one point you roar like a dinosaur, and on the next page you've "created" a dinosaur! It's good fun.

The only thing I will say about it, is that it works better as a hardcover. On my tablet, the pages would turn if we touched them and swirled. But it's easy enough to just swipe back.

So, yeah, if you've got little ones, or know someone with littles, it's a fun and cute book.

***ARC courtesy of Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Baymax is so CUTE! He has a non-threating hugable design. In one part Heiro puts on Baymaxes first suit of armor on and Baymax says,"This may underestemate my non-threating hugable design." Then Heiro says," Thats kind of the idea buddy."Then Heiro says," You look sick." Then Baymax says,"I can not be sick, I'm a robot." Then Heiro says," It's just an exspression." LOL, right?!

I liked this part because Baymax looks adorable. My favorite characters are, GoGo,Honey Lemon, and Baymax, Fred is fun and all, just he is really annoying like my brother. My favorite part with Fred is when he is like," It's Fred time. Super jump! ... Gravity crush!... Falling harrrrrd!!!!!!!."

I loved this movie. Maybe you should watch it too on Red Box because it is cute.
This was cute! I had my big kids read it to the baby tonight, and it was a big hit all around! It's a picture book, so it's definitely more for the younger crowd, but it has ninja grammas, zip lines, and a pirate. What more could you ask for?

I'm going to have them review it ;)

Kids' Review:

Son: This was funny. I liked it when the crossing guards' clothes blew off! Is Gramma a ninja?

Me: Your gramma? Ha! no.

Son: Oh man, that would be cool. Oh well.

Daughter: This is for maybe first graders, so I'm too old for it.

Me: But did you like it?

Daughter: Yeah, it was funny, but it was cute for the baby.

Me: So should I read it again?

All: Yeah!
This was a fun read for the kiddos

I read it out loud at first, then my daughter took my nook and finished it. She said it was just like the show! My son said the same thing, but it wasn't really his thing. He only watched Littlest Pet Shop because his big sis makes him ;P

I'd recommend this for kids 6-10, it was pretty simplistic for my 10 year old, but she really digs graphic novels of late, and this one was a cute one.

If you've ever seen Littlest Pet Shop, this is exactly like the show, so you know what you're in for.
I've read and loved the first in this series, and I was surprised my young children did too! When I saw this was up, I grabbed it!

This can't be read as a stand-alone, and it can't be read out of order. It was really REALLY difficult to read if you aren't up to date on the series. My kids and I have read the first 2, and we grabbed the 4th from the library, but unfortunately unless you've read all the books, you will be completely confused.

Now, I've given it a 4 because I can gather from the first couple books that I like what's happened between books 2 and 6. That being said, my daughter didn't finish it because she was confused, and while my son did read it, he said the same, that he didn't know what was going on.

We're trying to track down the other books, and between the library and the book store, I'm sure we can catch up.
LOVED IT!

This is a comic book, like the Big Nate books. I liked this more than I thought I would. I think it deserves 5 stars because it made me laugh. I like the cat Mooch, and the dog Earl. I didn't want to read about Sourpuss at first, but he turned out to be funny too. He really hates Mondays. I don’t know why he hates Mondays, it’s not like he has to go to school or work, but it’s really funny.

The jokes about the Marvel heroes were funny. A squirrel dropped a hard nut on Iron Man on the head and he got knocked out. And then Spiderman fell for it too! The exact same thing! It was so funny! This was nice because I don’t see the Mutts in my Sunday comics in the newspaper anymore.

There’s another character who’s a little crab and he hates the sun and says bad words like this-> @#$%
He’s crabby. LOL

I would tell people to buy this book because it’s pretty funny.

What a fun idea! It's really for younger readers, but you might have to explain the choose your own aspect. My second grader thought the writing was too easy, but had trouble with choosing which direction to go. He kept wanting to turn the page directly and not understanding why he'd have to flip forward to another page.

There are about a dozen different choices here, which may be a bit much for this age group. Again, definitely for the younger crowd. I'd suggest first graders.

But it's still a neat and different type of book. If you have a Batman lover, or a graphic novel reader, this would be a great idea for you.
This book was so cool! I checked it out from my school library and I loved it. The librarian told me it would be too hard for me, but I knew I could read it. I proved her wrong and I loved this book.

To begin with, Poppy, Zach, and Alice played with dolls together. One day, Zach told them, “I am too old to play with dolls.”Then his friends were stunned that he said that. That night Poppy woke up, but she thought that she was still dreaming. She wasn’t. Then Poppy saw a doll that told her if she didn’t bury it, she and her friends would be sorry.

Secondly, Poppy told them that she had the weirdest dream ever. Then Poppy told them that a doll told her to bury her. Zach and Alice told Poppy it must have been a dream. But Poppy told them it felt like the doll was trying to tell her something.

To end with, they went into the tree house and brought the doll with them. Poppy told Alice and Zach the tale of Eleanor Keacher .Then they take the doll’s head off and look inside the doll. They found a piece of paper saying, Liverville .That is when Poppy, Alice, and Zach take an adventure across the deep blue to get to the cemetery to bury the doll so Eleanor wouldn’t haunt them.
Rob Burnside’s life is
in ruins. After his escapades with Pinocula and his resulting outrageous
lies, everyone is fed up with him. In this Creature from My Closet book
by Obert Skye, Rob needs help. And his science laboratory closet is
there to give him a hand. Meet Katfish, a mashup of Katniss from the
Hunger Games and the Little Mermaid. This girl is strong as nails and
sports a tail. Everyone at Rob's school is excited about an upcoming
riff on the Hunger Games created by Principal Smelt: the Fun-ger Games.
Rob is less excited because the principal and his mom have roped him
into participating. But Katfish is sticking around to help Rob out with
girl advice, Fun-ger Games tips, and how to get people to stop hating
him. What could go wrong?

I saw this at the library and the cover looked cool. This was funny. The pictures are more like comics, but there's a story too, not just like a graphic novel or comic book. It has paragraphs and a story, but with comics added in. I loved it.

It's really about this guy named Rob and the book is his diary. It kind of reminds me of Dork Diaries, but I think it's funnier. But I also think this is for younger kids than Dork Diaries is. It has more humor, and it's more 4th grade level.

This is his life. Every chapter is a day, and funny stuff happens to him. But Rob and his brother one time went to Rob's friend Rex's house, his mom made him put on homemade sunblock and then Rob's like "is it supposed to stink?" and so they jumped into the pool to wash it off. But it was yellow so it looked like they peed, and a girl was watching them and Rob said, "I bet this looks bad." She said, "You bet right." LOL

One day his dad got him a weird door at a garage sale. It had a brass doorknob with a bearded guy on it that Rob calls Beardy. He thinks Beardy is alive and is bringing to life all the characters from the books in his closet (he never reads, so he hides his books in his closet). That's how Katfish comes to life. I think Beardy invited her.

She helped Rob have a better life and went back into his closet at the end, and then Rob finished Catching Fire. Her advice to him was "Keep Reading."

I like the paper bag princess, but it would be better if it was a chapter book. When I read it that is what I thought it was, but it’s a picture book meant for little kids. But I liked when the dragon burned off all her clothes and she could only find a paper bag to wear.

I like the fact that she’s smarter than the prince, and the dragon. She doesn’t need a prince to save her, especially a dumb prince like Ronald who only cares about being rich and having a “real” princess to marry.

Elizabeth calls him a bum. That’s the best part!

Girls don’t need a boy to save them. We save ourselves.

Then she runs off into the sunset in her paper bag.
Review from my 7 year old:

I like Big Nate, because it is funny and I like his friends. I like Big Nate. It made me laugh. You should read Big Nate.

Review from my 9 year old:

I like reading Big Nate books, because after school it's nice to have something fun that puts you in a better mood than reading school books. The drawings are really good and their expressions are so funny. I always like when Nate flips out, and I like the part where they make it look like Charlie Brown.

A couple of years ago, my daughter was having trouble finding things to read she liked, and my mother-in-law bought a couple Big Nate books. They sort of sat around until recently. This summer my son discovered the Big Nate books and he has read every single one we could get our hands on. I've bought them, borrowed from the library, borrowed from friends, you get the picture. We like Big Nate in our house.

I was really excited to share this with the kids.
I know we rarely review YA or MG here at Got Fiction? but with my
kids getting older, I don't really know what's appropriate for them to
read. I've taken a couple chances lately, and found some great books! Rose and the Lost Princess was one of them.

My 9 year old daughter and I read this one together, so it's only fair that we review it together.
I'll
go first. I loved the storyline. For someone who doesn't typically read
YA, I found this book surprisingly good. Not only was Rose an easy
character to relate to, but she was a great heroine. I had no problem
imagining my younger self as Rose. In fact, if I had had this book as a
child, I would have loved it, no doubt.

Rose has been taken from
an orphanage in London to become a servant in a magician's house. She
never once takes her position for granted and is incredibly happy to be
earning her own way. She's maybe 10 or so, and in the first book, she
uses her magic to save some children from a witch. So now the household
staff are very wary of her. The public is starting to get a little
nervous at the thought of magicians having so much power. It almost
turns into full-scale riots at one point.

The national treasure is
a princess, a 7 year old girl named Jane. After a botched kidnapping by
magical means,Rose's master goes into a tizzy. He has to prove to the
king, and to the people, that not all magicians are like the witch from
book 1. At the same time he has to find out who tried to kidnap Princess
Jane.
But of course, it's Rose who solves the mystery, while at the same time endangering her own life. She wants to help.

The
writing was fabulous. It was easy enough for my third grader, but it
was also challenging enough to keep her interest. Books that are "too
easy" are "baby books" to her. From an adult standpoint, I never felt as
if I were reading a children's book. The language and descriptions were
flawless. I loved this book.

My daughter:
I loved Rose, but I loved her talking cat Gus more. He was funny and I have a cat who I wish could talk like Gus.
I also loved Rose's friend Freddie even though he was sometimes mean, and Bella was cool too.
The
bad guy wasn't caught though and I want to know what happens to him.
And I also want my mom to buy the first book so I can see how Rose
defeated the bad witch.
The best part was when Rose figured out how to bring Jane back.
I think it ended too fast though. It felt like there should be more where the bad guy was caught and put in jail.

So there you have it, talking cat, magicians and princesses. What more could a nine year old want?

KK's mom here, my daughter and I read this together and neither one of us really liked it. It's a Did Not Finish (DNF) for us both.

That being said, a lot of what I didn't care for was the author's voice.

My daughter was bored with it. She didn't want to read it after the first chapter. So I started to read to her, which we do every night after silent reading. Even that didn't entice her. Since neither of us enjoyed it, we decided to move on.

I'd like to say she's too young for this book, but she's enjoyed Julie Kagawa's Winter's Passage which is for an older audience. I'm not really sure why this didn't work for her, unless like me, the writing and author's voice didn't work for her.

In fact, she actually didn't feel comfortable writing a less-than-favorable review, which is why I am.

Today is World Literacy Day and I bought this book at my school Book Fair.

It's really funny because Kitty is hilarious. This time the author was in it. Nick Bruel got scratched up by Kitty. On my favorite page he's like AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Nick Bruel made Kitty fat, and made her eat turnips, and he was like "You have to eat a better diet, Kitty."

Then he wrote 3 stories about her that were fake and they were to show Kitty that she had to eat better. At the end of the book is a turnip recipe that says kids better have an adult supervising. Maybe because it'll explode? I don't know but my mom says we can cook a turnip with that recipe this week.
This is the second in this middle grade series, and I enjoyed it as much as the first one. My 5 year old son had me read it out loud to him. He seemed to enjoy the silly things the best.

Our favorite villain-in-training is back, and Demon Kid is looking forward to ruling the school this year. But there's a new kid at school, Copycat, who seems to outshine him in everything. More than just Demon Kid’s cool factor is at risk. He may not get to go on the big bank heist that’s being planned at the school.

Can Demon Kid fix his reputation and enjoy his status as popular once again? Will he figure out just who this new kid really is? Add in the surprise twist at the end, and you’ll have quite the fun book on your hands.

The author has really found her voice and is hitting her stride. Both my kids enjoy this series, but my son seems to like it more. I’d say if you were to mash up the movies Sky High with Megamind, you’d have this series. A fun chapter book that will have you rooting for the villains :)

***review copy provided by the author
Heidi Heckelbeck seems
like any other eight-year-old, but she has a secret: She’s a witch in
disguise. Careful to keep her powers hidden (but excited to use them all
the same), Heidi’s learning to live like any other kid—who just happens
to be witch. And with easy-to-read language and illustrations on
almost every page, Heidi Heckelbeck chapter books are perfect for
beginning readers.

Heidi and her brother Henry have always been
homeschooled—until now. But Heidi is not happy about attending Brewster
Elementary, especially not when meanie Melanie Maplethorpe turns Heidi’s
first day of school into a nightmare by announcing that Heidi is smelly
and ruining her art project. Heidi feels horrible and never wants to go
back to school—but while sulking in her room at home, she remembers her
special medallion and Book of Spells. With a little bit of carefully
concealed magic, Heidi might be able to give Melanie a taste of her own
medicine….
A Review by KK:
This is a really good book for a chapter book. I read it all in one night. Heidi is a witch, but I didn't know she was a witch, and I thought my mom was making it up. But she really is a witch!

She had to keep it a secret and I think I really want to try the spell, but I don't have a medallion or the eye of a gingerbread man.

Heidi is homeschooled and when she has to go to a normal school she is scared and doesn't have any friends. She makes one friend, but there's a mean girl named Melanie who is really mean because Heidi is new to the school and Melanie is super mean. She had to go to the principal's office, she was so mean!

At the end, Heidi still doesn't like school or Melanie, but she has a nice friend named Lucy and her brother an mom try to help her like school too. And she says, "One thing is for sure, I'm not going to forget who I am. I'm HEIDI HECKELBECK, and I'm a witch!"

I like how there are a lot of pictures, and I like how the words are bigger. It makes it easier so you don't get lost in the book.

I think this is a good book for a second grader. It was a bit easy for me, but I like it a lot. I give it 500 stars, but my mom says I can only give it 5.Highland Hussyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13819878715462070200noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1438316636900507198.post-47424361129321089092013-06-21T21:40:00.001-07:002013-06-21T21:42:25.257-07:00Review: Oh the Things My Mom Will Do by Marianne RichmondOh, the Things My Mom Will Do by Marianne Richmond

My mom liked this book. It didn’t seem to be for little kids. It was meant for moms. Like maybe I would buy it for my mom on Mother’s Day. It told about the life of a mom who does everything for you if you’re a little kid.

The mom does a lot. She takes care of the hamster when it’s sick, and I know my mom took care of my cat when he was really sick, so I know it’s stuff moms do, but it’s not fun to read.

I think the pictures were for grown ups too. I liked it, but I don’t like it a lot and I don’t want to read it again.
My 8year old's review:

I think it is LOL is funny. I think everyone should read it. Get it from the library. I like it better than the Big Nate books. I like how this book is about greg's life and all the funny things that happen to him. It makes me think about what high school is gonna be like.

Greg only has one friend and the rest of the guys are bulies. They pick on him, and one of them actually punched him!

[I asked my daughter what happened next? Did he fight back? My kid says "No because it's called Diary of a Wimpy Kid, not Diary of a Bully." Lol okay then kiddo]

I like the pictures and how they're mixed with pages that don't have pictures too. I think this is more fun to read than some of the other books my mom picks out. I want her to buy me all of them.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review posted on Got Fiction?

My 7 year old daughter's review:

"I like it. The pictures are cool, especially in color. I want more pictures though. But the bad guys were funny. My favorite part was where he said Werewolf Alert."

My review:
This was a fun take on Supers-this time we have school for the super villains. If anyone ever saw that movie Sky High it reminded me of that-where they fly to a school especially for Super Villains and they have normal school behavior. There are the cool kids, the new kids, the bullies, it’s a good set-up. It was quite a crack up.

The characters went to classes like "World Domination" with teachers named "Dr. Super Evil" and I caught myself smiling a lot as my daughter read this to me.

The fact that their teachers would have accepted "trying to take over the world" as an excuse for being tardy cracked my daughter up. I got a kick out of the antics since it’s a school of villains, the teachers are a wee bit different than your normal high school or middle school.
I think it was a nice break from reading the Jewel Fairies and Captain Underpants that we read almost every night.

The only thing I'd suggest is that 7 is a bit young to enjoy it to its fullest. I'd recommend this chapter book for age 9 and up.

***Review copy provided by author
